There has been a long-standing belief by the uninformed that lifting heavy weights will make a woman bulky. This is simply not true. Men and women who lift weights simply strengthen their bodies. Lifting heavy weights builds long, lean, fat-free bodies. Women won't become bulky, unless they take supplements, performance-enhancing drugs, steroids, and double their caloric intake.
When you lift a heavy weight, you tear down your current muscles that were used to perform that lift. Almost immediately after working out, your body goes to work to repair your damaged muscles. This includes forcing healthy oxygen throughout your body, which benefits you from head to time. In anticipation that it may receive such a challenge in the future, your brain tells your body to repair those torn muscles even stronger than before. This process can run for as many as three days after you lift weights. With so many chemical processes devoted to making you stronger, your calorie and schedule goes straight up. So instead of bulking up, you actually trim down. You replace fat with strong muscle. Fat is burned to create the energy that muscle growth and repair requires. When women lift weights, they start to lead their body to the slim, trim, toned look they desire. One other wonderful weightlifting benefit is the amount of time it takes to show results. Research reveals that lifting a heavier weight for a shorter number of repetitions works much better for toning and trimming your body than a low amount of weight and a high number of repetitions. Don't believe the myth that women become less feminine looking and bulky by lifting weights. It simply isn't true. A sexy, toned, strong and healthy body is the actual reward of strength training for women.
